Disclaimer: Not mine. Don't sue.
Author's Notes: It’s a giant metaphor.
Everything in Korea was green. At least, all the buildings were. It was a sorry, olive-drab excuse for green, but it was green all the same.
In spring, though, the true greens showed. Between the blazing cold and bitter heat, and just after the downpours, the hills came alive with real, verdant, vibrant, true, healthy greens. It brightened their little corner of the war and made the tents look like dull, dingy brown.
With the visual onslaught came another sensory assault—delicate little flowers with their sweet perfumes. It dulled the ever-present odor of the cesspool and the kitchen when the wind blew at just the right angle, and brightened their world just that small bit.
The buildings were olive year-round, but the true greens, like happiness, came for only a few all-too-short weeks each year and made Korea almost bearable.
