The midnight sky was never blue, but always purple-black scattered with stars. Just as often seen while leaving OR as it was when exiting the Officers’ Club—either situation warranting a staggering, meandering path toward cots—it went unnoticed and unappreciated, the deep royal color presiding over exhaustion and drunkenness rather than the joy and revelry it richly deserved. When there was a dearth of death and injury, nights were spent inside around a poker table or in the supply tent with another warm, willing body, but always the gorgeous purple hue of the sky was ignored, despite its spark of warmth.
