FIC: "Knowing", Radar O'Reilly
Title: Knowing
Fandom: M*A*S*H
Pairing, etc: Radar O'Reilly
Prompt: 035. Sixth Sense
Word Count: 207
Rating: Everyone
Disclaimer: If only.
Author's Notes: I know he was the obvious choice, but I couldn’t resist.
He always heard the choppers before they came. He didn’t know how, and didn’t really care; it usually meant the doctors were ready to do their stuff sooner, and that helped people.
Radar never thought about his gift. It was just there.
He could tell what other people were thinking, sometimes. He knew how Colonel Blake felt when he heard about his son’s birth—overwhelming joy tinted with sadness and fury—and Major Burns’ anguish whenever he thought Major Houlihan was leaving him had to be blocked out. Trapper was the only one Radar couldn’t really read, but that was okay, because Hawkeye was like an open book, and Hawkeye always knew what Trapper thought.
Radar never thought about his ability. Other people’s thoughts weren’t that interesting; he just adjusted his actions depending on the moods of others.
Before the phone rang, he knew. He heard the bullets rip through the thin metal of the fuselage and choked on the smoke and dizziness and terror. When he realized it wasn’t happening to him, but to Colonel Blake, the bile rose in his throat and he retched into the trash can. The phone rang soon after, and he knew.
Radar never thought about his curse. He just hated it.
