Dust choked the camp, especially during summer. The front, a mere three miles from the camp on a good day, sent yellow clouds everywhere from machines and bullets tearing up the earth. It was impossible to keep the chalky mustard-colored dust down, and it got everywhere—the Still, the mess tent (though it was arguably an improvement, at least to the color of the powdered eggs), and, worst of all, the operating room. In spite of all precautions, wounds inflicted by the war were worsened by the dirt its weapons tossed up, infecting them with its ugly, omnipresent, seeping yellow.
