Blue was a color to be cherished, particularly when it came in the sky. They’d given up hoping for a truly blue sky in the early months of the war; so close to the front, it was usually an ugly yellow-brown from the dust kicked up by tanks and shells. When dust didn’t dirty the horizon, heavy gray clouds did, looming over the camp and turning it filthier than ever, with mud and garbage floating along the swirling rivulets. On the rare occasions a blue sky dared show itself, nearly everyone in camp would spend the day in the sun and clean, silt-free air. The blue gave a lift to the spirits of the staff, despite its usual link to depression and sadness.
