The amazing thing about dirt was how water could turn it brown. Beginning as an ugly, hard yellow, water somehow turned it to clinging, stubborn, heavy brown mud. The color got everywhere—kicked up by jeeps and ambulances, thrown by the force of the chopper blades, tracked in everywhere by boots. The brown, though sticky and annoying, was a welcome change to the yellow dust—it was easier to clean from and keep out of wounds, reducing the chances of infection and further agony. When it settled into a wound, though, it could be lethal, carrying a host of bacteria and parasites eager to eat through flesh.
Brown really wasn’t much better than yellow.
