Every so often, the camp played host to a truckload of youngsters heading south. For a day or two, the place would come alive with laughter and shrieks of childish glee. Smiles could be seen on nearly every face at the affirmation of life offered by the small, bright sparks, and even the least personable would offer the kids something, though they left far more behind in the hearts and minds of these benevolent foreigners. Inevitably, though, the truck would move on, and giggles were replaced by groans of pain, happy shrieks by those of agony, and the pain of the soldiers was made all the sharper by what had gone before.
