He’d managed to be there when Erin was born, charming his way into the delivery room by virtue of his medical credentials and family name. While other nervous fathers-to-be paced the halls or stepped out for a cigarette and drink, BJ sat by Peg, brave, strong Peg who all but crushed his hand rather than cry out. He’d stayed with them until a maternity-ward nurse shooed him out after Peg fell asleep.

And at home, when he sorted through the mail, he found the notice. Six weeks to be with his wife and baby girl, then off to Fort Ord.
