The scar wasn’t just a scar. It was evidence of how close Ed had come to dying, proof of the callousness of human nature. Ed hadn’t even done anything beyond trying to escort a witness to court. Wrong place, right time, and a bullet tore through his chest. Just one, unlike the witness, and he’d survived. Barely.

Fontana should have been with him, Jack thought bitterly. If he had been the one shot, la famiglia of Chicago and its insidious New York connections would have exacted retribution on everyone remotely connected to the hit. Favored sons, even ones on the blue side of the law, were inviolate, after all. It sure as hell would have saved a lot of time trying to track the hit man down—and maybe Fontana would have been out of the picture permanently.

That was uncharitable, and Jack knew it, but he didn’t regret it. Fontana was a thorn in his side, dirtier than any Two-Seven homicide detective in years. Even Briscoe and Logan hadn’t played as far beyond the law as Fontana did. Profaci, Van Buren’s most recent dirty cop, had good reason for lowering himself to work with the criminal element. Fontana had just been born to it, and never gotten out of the life.

His thumb coasted across the smooth, shiny, pink scar again, bringing him back to the present. The present, with Ed, here, in his bed. Ed asleep, and not wearing a shirt to bed. It was the first time he’d done that since getting out of the hospital.

Since coming home.

Sure, they hadn’t talked about it, but Ed hadn’t gone back to his apartment much. He seemed to prefer staying here with Jack, at least for the time being, a trend Jack rather hoped would continue.

Ed stirred and looked blearily at Jack. “Hey man, why are you still awake?”

“I was thinking.” Jack’s thumb rasped across the healed tear, and the ripped muscle it concealed, again.

Ed nodded sleepily. “Bad, isn’t it?”

“They did a good job,” Jack hedged.

Ed seemed willing to let it drop, covering Jack’s hand with his own and throwing his other arm across Jack, his eyes drifting shut again. Jack remembered seeing him in the hospital, unconscious rather than asleep, hooked up to heart and oxygen monitors, pumped full of drugs, and another surge of anger passed through him. He told himself to relax—after all, Ed was still alive, and he wasn’t in the hospital any longer, and that was something to be thankful for.

Jack snorted at the thought. Positive side coming out? What would Adam say? Probably that Jack should use his common sense instead, knowing the old man. Being positive didn’t win cases—logic, and evidence, did.

Jack shook his head, clearing it of thoughts about work and concentrating instead on the man lying beside him. When Jack was sure Ed was out, he shifted closer, curling against him before starting to doze off himself, trying not to think of anything so unpleasant as shootings and death.

After all, now that Ed was home, Jack was, too, and that was reason enough to think positively.

Wow, this is fun :-), reading. I'm so not involved in LJ I had no idea this stuff was out here. Okay, third hand up, please.

I love what you've put in here about Fontana, making Jack's emotional turmoil over that guy right up front. I honestly hadn't considered how much Jack might know of Fontana's mob connections, but I can see that he could; I can accept that :-). I love it.

Very good. Nice moments interspersed with a touch of angst. :-) <= see smile. Thank you!
